7-Star Challenge Week 3

soldier_sm

Learning new stuff all the time! Still had to do a lot of color correction after the painting was done, though, which is something I want to get out of the habit of. I have a tendency to paint very gray, middle-value colors, even when I feel like I am going buckwild saturation crazy. Getting better, though. Only had to nudge this one to get it into a more pleasing color range.

I’m also pleasantly surprised to find that doing the Challenge is a lot of fun, which is just madness considering it has also destroyed me three weeks in a row.  Typically those two things don’t meet in the wild.

Except in Ninja Gaiden.  Then they meet, trade recipes, and have terrifying, ass-kicking babies that only hit you while you’re jumping.

7-Star Challenge Week 2

followed_sm

I’d intended to use this week as a chance to practice backgrounds, but it ended up being an experiment in color. It was also a cautionary tale. I lost about 3 hours worth of work due to a Photoshop crash about 45 minutes before posting this. Save early. Save often. Don’t try new stuff and open 3000×2000 pixel files without saving first, either.

A little creative cropping has saved me this week, but I was almost done for.

This also marks week number two of not touching the airbrush tool. I think it’s good for me.

7-Star Challenge Week 1

Good thing I put in that little loophole about sucking being okay. Oh well. Next week will be better. Looks like it’s time to start practicing backgrounds.

Off to a good start

Aric, in true 7-Star worthiness has already finished his weekly, and is now all up in 7-Star Challenge’s smug face. Check it out at the Tiki Kitchen Blog.

I feel so far behind; half of the participants have turned in their entries already. But that is AWESOME, because this exercise is totally working. I can’t wait to get home and do some more work on my Viral piece.

Staying ahead of the game

Even though the first 7-Star Challenge deadline isn’t till next Sunday, figured it’d be a good idea to start the work early. Here’s the first rough. Gotta add something to the left-bottom quadrant, because this composition is too boring.

Added bonus crap trivia!
Most of the abominably flawed illustrations you’ve come to expect from me start in this very same manner! Wow! That should settle things between you and your Uncle Paul.

Well, up to but not including the murder, I mean. But the stuff about me is covered, dude.
