No, but seriously. Totally out of captions.

No, but seriously. Totally out of captions.

Some more rough hands before bed. Feeling very comfortable with relaxed poses (woo!). Need to move on to more fists and grasping poses. And foreshortening, which is a major weakness of mine (at least in the hand sketches). Almost every good pose idea I get in my head has the hands pointing towards the viewer, so I’m sitting on a bunch of potential pieces for no good reason.

You shall be conquered, foreshortened fingers*.

But first, some video games and sleepytime.

*Those with stubby digits, please do not be alarmed.

"Heart 4? I don't understan...OH.(blush)"

Another quickie. Really starting to get more comfortable with hands, which is both a semi-shock and a joy. Even though I can see problems with the anatomy here, I knocked the hands out in moments without my usual elaborate planning — and they look better than some hands I’ve spent half an hour on.

They’re still not where I want them to be, but they’re definitely becoming less of a stumbling point, and that’s good. Hoping to have some more drawing time this weekend. Really in the mood to draw, but stressing out at work. Should be over soon, though.

The stress, not my job. I think.

"Hello"

It’s a long story.

"America, I wanna touch ya."

"America, I wanna touch ya."

Hands getting better. In stark contrast to last night, drawing tonight was easy and fun. In fact, I’m gonna do more. But it’s a Lost night, so I wanted to post before I hunker down for the evening.

By the way, if you take the “style” out of the Burne Hogarth books, there’s actually a lot of great info to take away about anatomy and structure. My wife brought some home from the library for me, and I haven’t flipped through them in almost 20 years. They’re way better than I remember. I blame my youthful ego and early overemphasis on style for this.

If you’re an aspiring artist and are steering clear because you don’t like the way he draws, or you’re afraid of being steered down some kind of western comic book drawing path, don’t worry — you can hate the way he draws and still learn a crapload* from his books. The man taught at Art Center. He could draw like nobody’s business.

Besides, you don’t have to copy art to learn. Read it, look at yourself in a mirror, and draw from life. You can still apply the principles without straight-up reproductions.

And pardon me if I’m sounding a little harsh — I just needed someone to tell me this when I was 13, and no one did. Know what happened? I tried to be Jim Lee for 10 years, that’s what. While that’s fine for Jim Lee, who is a great artist, it also prevented me from getting better for over a decade.

The moral: don’t try to be [x] artist. Be you. Just get really good at being you.

Also don’t get the mini sirloin burgers at Jack in the Box — go straight to the tacos or the Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger. Someone should have told me that at 13, too.

*Apologies. I sometimes slip into metric.

It's almost fan art, anyway

It's almost fan art, anyway

Totally exhausted and just not into things tonight. But I did draw, which is something, I guess. Bleh. Not really Nico Robin, just trying to draw bigger, and when her head started to come together, I thought it looked Nico Robin -esque. Just, you know, not drawn well.

That’s okay. Every crappy drawing is one less you have to do to get them out of your system.

4 million more to go.
